Imageboards are only a type of internet forum. Do you think a new type could be made? What features would it have?

 No.135

Eh. Imageboards are kind of optimized for the internet forum exprience. If you had an alternative to imageboards, then by definition it'd probably have little to no images to differentiate itself, which wouldn't help with discussion. I could imagine a variation of the imageboard coming up, but not something different.

I dunno
All I know is that social media platform are getting more centralized
Videos are part of this trend
4Chan would have to be more Reddit and a bit Tiktok to become more popular in current times
Niche just isnt it

True. imageboards and other internet forums will always be just for those interested in the format, or some peripheral aspect of the specific website. For a social media to become mainstream, it needs to be easy to consume and expressly designed to make it marketable to the max.

In other words, not an imageboard.

BeReal is the only example I found of a social media app being actually good to use, removing all the artificiality of Instagram. But it's not a forum. And I don't think there'll be a mainstream internet forum, ever, just some little spaces for small communities. And I'm fine with that.

Imageboards have 3 main features.
•Anonymity
•Image required when starting a thread
•Threads eventually get deleted automatically
Some of these features could be used for some new type of internet forum, but it would have to be distinct enough.

Reddit is literally the most popular internet forum whether we like it or not.

i remember there was an "audioboard" called audiochan, but the head admin shut it down for some reason.
the source code is on github if anyone wants to revive it:

That sounds very gimmicky but is interesting.

Most ordinary people these days want a slick user interface with lots of smooth edges, curves, and plain colors with a corporate memphis art style. Importantly, they want something that feeds their narcissism and allows them to express their identity through an avatar and a bunch of friends with all this including their irl info. Lastly, they are actually profitable tech companies whereas imageboards often run at a loss and are just community projects, so there's no way you'd get financing for an internet forum to compete with social media.

> I don't think there'll be a mainstream internet forum, ever,
2channel, the grandaddy of all chan sites, was as mainstream as Reddit in Japan and the country's biggest internet community until it split in 2014. At one time, it was the biggest site on the internet and it was an anonymous textboard/BBS.

All I can think of is an anonymous version of Reddit with the kind of attitude to moderation you see on some of the better imageboards. But it would still have to have that memphis art style and have the look and feel of a Silicone Valley tech company.

I doubt imageboards or internet forums will ever be as big as they used to be and anonymous 2chan/4chan type sites are on the way out. Vast majority of gen Z just don't trust those places and see them negatively.
